About

The University of Queensland Pipe Band at Emmanuel College has been entertaining crowds for 10 years now, but the veterans of concert and competition are still as fresh and enthusiastic as the day they first played together…and it shows.

Maintaining an excellent standard of playing at all times, the band has been known to rouse even the most lethargic of listeners and set not just Scottish pulses racing.

Today, The University of Queensland Pipe Band at Emmanuel College is a tremendous standard bearer for the University of Queensland and Emmanuel College, both locally and in the wider Queensland and Northern New South Wales regions.

The UQ Pipe Band perform with Andre Rieu, 2008

Numbering around 25 male and female members, The University of Queensland Pipe Band at Emmanuel College features 13 to 14 pipers and around 10 drummers, including 7 snare drummers, one bass and two tenor drummers. Band membership is open to all members of the University and College as well as musicians from the wider Brisbane community.

The band’s broad repertoire stretches from the haunting Amazing Grace and Highland Cathedral, through the rousing favourites of Scotland the Brave, Cock of the North and 100 Pipers; Aussie tunes Waltzing Matilda and Road to Gundagai; to the strathspeys, reels and jigs of Scotland.

With a broad repertoire, talent, commitment and hard work, the band has achieved significant milestones since its members first took up pipe and drum together a decade ago. They’ve been proud to represent the University and College in major events such as ANZAC day, St Patrick’s Day and Tartan Day; and were one of a select group of pipe bands to entertain packed audiences as part of the finale of the recent Andre Rieu concerts.

The band continues to develop and thrive under the patronage of Emmanuel College Principal, Professor Stewart Gill.
